Marriott Bonvoy Launches Most Significant Redesign in Programme History

Marriott Bonvoy has launched the most comprehensive redesign in its programme history, overhauling tier structure, point valuation, benefit delivery, and redemption options in a series of changes that the company describes as the most fundamental rethink of a major hotel loyalty programme in over a decade.

The redesign, announced to members via email this week and effective from July 1, 2026, introduces five changes that will affect the approximately 212 million enrolled members globally.

The most significant structural change is the introduction of a new "Bonvoy Elite Select" tier above current Titanium status, requiring 120 nights per year and conferring guaranteed suite upgrades at 200 qualifying properties, dedicated telephone support with average answer times of under 60 seconds, and unlimited complimentary breakfast entitlements.

Complementing this is a revised point earn structure that rewards spend rather than nights in luxury and premium tiers, and a new redemption framework that introduces dynamic award pricing, aligned to market demand, rather than fixed category rates. This change mirrors moves made by airline loyalty programmes over the past five years and has been met with mixed response from power users who benefited from the predictability of fixed rates.

New experience-based redemption options include exclusive access to events previously available only to the highest tier members, a curated art and culture programme offering private access to museum collections and gallery events, and an expanded portfolio of chef's table experiences across Marriott's global property network.

The redesign follows similar programme updates by Hilton Honors in 2025 and IHG One Rewards in 2024, reflecting industrywide recognition that loyalty programmes built primarily around point accumulation are losing relevance to experience-focused travellers.
