Demand for Green Hotel Certification Triples in 12 Months

Applications for internationally recognised green hotel certifications tripled in the twelve months to April 2026, driven by a combination of guest demand, corporate travel policy requirements, and investor pressure on hotel portfolios to demonstrate credible sustainability credentials.
Green Key, the world's largest sustainable tourism certification scheme, reports receiving 14,800 new hotel applications in the period, compared to 4,900 in the equivalent period a year earlier. The Earth Check and LEED for Hospitality programmes report similar surges, with waiting lists forming in markets where assessor capacity has been overwhelmed by the volume of applications.
The demand spike is being attributed primarily to two structural shifts. First, corporate travel programmes at major companies are increasingly requiring that hotels used for business travel meet third-party sustainability standards, creating a direct commercial incentive for hotels targeting the MICE and corporate segment to pursue certification. Second, institutional investors in hotel real estate are beginning to require ESG performance data, including environmental certifications, as part of standard portfolio reporting.
Guest demand is also a contributing factor, though industry observers note that it operates differently from the commercial pressures. Guests, particularly in the 25-45 age bracket, express preferences for sustainable properties in surveys and booking research, but conversion data suggests that the influence on actual booking decisions is more modest. The certification benefit is primarily commercial rather than consumer-facing.
Certification bodies are struggling to scale assessment capacity in line with demand. Green Key has announced plans to train 400 additional assessors globally over the next 18 months, while piloting a digital pre-assessment tool intended to reduce the time from application to certification by up to 40 percent.
